Program Overview
In collaboration with Media Development Program (MDP) partners Management Systems International; CARE; and D3 Systems, IREX works with media outlets and training institutes to improve the professionalism and sustainability of Egypt’s media sector. MDP offers training, consulting, and equipment assistance to Egyptian print and electronic media as well as to universities and other media support organizations.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES
MDP has four key goals:

Promote professional development among Egyptian mid-career media professionals, emerging journalists, and media managers by building media training capacity.
MDP provides consulting and grant support to universities, in-house training centers, and private training institutions to serve the media community with professional-level training in modern media management, journalism, English language skills, and technology. Improve the management and economic viability of Egyptian print and broadcast sectors.
MDP provides tailored consulting to media organizations in best international practices in media management and market research.-
Strengthen the professionalism and organizational capacity of local media.
The project supports media across Egypt in reporting on local issues with improved professionalism and market sustainability. -
Encourage an enabling environment for professional, objective, and economically viable media in Egypt.
The program provides support to local and regional media associations and NGOs that support media excellence and policy reform.
IREX Media Projects in Egypt
IREX launched its MENA Small Grants Program in Egypt in 2005, and drew participants from Egyptian universities in its Promoting Transparency through Journalism Education. IREX’s annual implementation of the Media Sustainability Index in Egypt began in 2006, as well as delivery of the media components of the Partnership Program for Democracy and Governance as a subgrantee to CARE.
