Felicia Alexander
Felicia Mode Alexander is a Boston-born social studies teacher who taught in Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and New Jersey. She began her career as a teacher of deaf students, including teaching at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Since relocating to Pennsylvania, she began teaching social studies to students in grades 6-12. A passionate student of the Holocaust, Alexander was recently honored with the Jack Zaifman Humanitarian Award for her efforts in teaching about global human rights, the Holocaust and modern genocide to her students. Since 2008, Alexander has advised a global human rights club at her current middle school and the high school where she taught previously, encompassing more than 150 students in grades 6-12. These students learn about the United Nations Millennium Goals and the conditions faced by their peers in developing nations, then they conduct unique activities which generate the funds to build schools or provide other essentials like clean water. This dynamic club is the impetus for Alexander’s desire to be in the TGC program.
Felicia Alexander strongly practices Nelson Mandela’s ideology, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. Felicia is dedicated to promoting global human rights and works with her students to investigate and take action against injustices in the U.S. and all over the world. She includes an American History unit plan that explores how visual primary sources apply the concepts of propaganda, perspective and bias. She connects the Cherokee Trail of Tears, Wounded Knee Massacre, Andersonville Prison, and Civil War battles to similar global events such as WWII Nazi Death Marches, Joseph Kony and LRA, Syrian Refugee camps in Turkey, and Darfurian refugee camps in Chad. In her unit, she challenges her students to think about how media has been used to justify and garner support for global atrocities. Her Global Education Guide also hosts unit and lesson plans for all subject areas and grades. Felicia traveled to Morocco for her International Field Experience and provides a host of resources on her travel blog.
