Caroline Hay began teaching at Tualatin High School in 2003. As an ELD teacher, she works with intermediate-level ELL students. Over the years Caroline worked to expand the school’s Spanish for Native Speakers program and she currently teaches two levels of Spanish Language Arts, while promoting language and culture with the school’s Latino students. She also teaches English Language Arts to sophomores. Caroline’s greatest passion in education is related to Critical Race Theory, and – since 2010 – she developed curriculum for and taught an elective course called “Race in the 21st Century,” which engages students with issues of race and racial equity. Caroline is a member of the school’s Equity Team and is an advisor for club MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán). By participating in TGC, Caroline developed lessons and activities that encourage students to become more empathetic and globally-oriented critical thinkers.

Caroline Hay believes global education is a relevant, engaging, and rigorous philosophy for viewing both the purposes and outcomes of education; it has the power to transform teachers, students, schools, and the educational paradigm. She provides a unit plan on Injustice and Resistance in Latin America. By exploring Latin American resistance movements, students determine personal areas of interest in relation to social justice, and propose solutions to social justice issues and participate in their peer’s proposed solutions. Students create blogs, videos, and an action project. Caroline traveled to Morocco on her International Field Experience and developed a travel blog with many resources.
