Nuray Mert, Turkey, is a well‐known columnist who was recently placed on "indefinate leave" by the daily newspaper Milliyet in a case seen as a challenge to press freedom in the country. In 2011, she came under verbal attack by the Turkish prime minister for her statements to media outlets of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party on government security policies. The television show she hosted was canceled after the prime minister's public condemnation, which led to a hate campaign and fears for her safety.
