Akola Thompson
Akola works in the Community Development Sector, leading Tamùkke Feminists. A gender-based violence (GBV) specialist, Akola leads a community of feminists in becoming stronger leaders in their homes and communities. Tamùkke Feminists provides information to women and girls on issues relevant to their social, economic, and mental development. While Guyana has several women’s groups, there are few that identify as feminist and even fewer that actively promote principles of bodily autonomy, anti-oppression, anti-discrimination, and anti-racism. The aim is to contribute towards building intersectional feminist thought in Guyana and promoting the formation of a network of feminists, who are leaders in their homes and communities. Coming to the YLAI Fellowship, Akola’s top business challenge is law and policy.
