Claudia Duque
As a correspondent for Radio Nizkor in Colombia, Claudia Duque tackles stories involving crime and corruption. She has been kidnapped, robbed and told to stop her reporting, but has continued nonetheless. Threats against Duque began with her investigation of the disappearance of Colombian children, and she has had to flee her country several times. While probing the August 1999 shooting death of Colombian humorist and journalist Jamie Garzon, Duque uncovered a systematic campaign of illegal surveillance, phone tapping, email interceptions, bank account monitoring and even death threats against her daughter and herself, carried out by the Colombian secret police. She was sued for slander and libel but was declared innocent after the Attorney General's Office confirmed the pattern of illegal espionage against more than 300 people, among them journalists, trade unionists, human rights defenders and judges. In 2010, she was recognized with the Courage in Journalism award of the International Women’s Media Foundation, among other honors.
