Eric Kayihura is the director of Radio Izuba, the first non‐state, community radio in Rwanda. Not influenced by any political party, Izuba has been able to sustain itself through sponsorship of programs and members’ contributions. Owned by the Association pour le dévelopement économique et communautaire de Kibungo and launched in 2004, it has a network of citizen reporters providing news from their communities. A 2010 survey found that in many of the districts it serves, Radio Izuba is the first choice among listeners, well ahead of the state broadcaster. Kayihura oversees a business plan that supports the station through membership fees and local and national sponsors.
