Juan Pablo Ospina Yepes
Juan works in the community development sector as the Co-founder of Emerge. For rural communities in the agricultural sector, Emerge is a social business that offers training to breed insects to produce animal feed and biofertilizer, with the profits being invested in education programs for rural youth affected by armed conflict, specifically in fields related to organic waste applications, biotechnology, the bioeconomy, climate change adaptation, and food security. Juan aims to benefit 8,000 young people in the short term and ultimately to develop systems for scaling up production using agro-industrial techniques. Coming into the YLAI Fellowship, Juan’s top business challenge is Scaling & Expansion. More specifically, once communities learn how to produce income, the challenge is a lack of interest in investing in education programs, impeding the mission to change realities through education. During the Fellowship Placement, Juan hopes to gain exposure and attract more customers to their social business to obtain economic resources to cover more tuition fees for rural communities.
