Julie Goler
Julie Goler has been teaching English at Beverly Hills High School since 1993 and has primarily taught Senior Ethnic Literature and Sophomore Honors English. Julie is a teacher leader at BHHS and has participated as a mentor teacher for more than ten years in BTSA, the California school site credentialing program. She is currently serving on PAR (Peer Assisted Review) in order to aid and assess struggling senior teachers. Since 2010, Julie created and developed The Hero Project which is BHHS’s One Book, One School event culminating in a week of activities for parents, staff and students who have all read the same work of literature. This event grew from one book a year, to three books a year and includes subjects and authors as well as panel discussions featuring experts in their fields; it is among the most highly praised programs in BHUSD. Outside of school, Julie is one of the most sought after book group facilitators in Los Angeles and moderates up to ten groups a month. As a TGC participant, Julie gained professional skills needed to teach globalization literature in her classroom.
Julie Goler believes in order to prepare students to meet 21st century college and career skills, school curriculum must be designed to meet global and technology demands of the future. Teachers must use global education to prepare students for careers and lives beyond the threshold of city and state. In her Global Education Guide, Julie includes a unit plan on William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and the Modern Tyrant. In the unit plan, students are asked to look at Macbeth in a modern context and see how he relates to present-day tyrants around the world. By adopting a global perspective, students learn that reading Macbeth is an opportunity to look at injustice and abuse around the world. In addition, students identify how literature acts as propaganda to manipulate people. Julie traveled to Russia for her International Field Experience and includes a collection of resources on her travel blog.
