Prossy Kawala is a co-founder and Chairperson of the Center for Media Literacy and Community Development (CEMCOD), a non-profit she initiated following her completion of the Community Solutions Program fellowship in 2012. Through her organization, Kawala is spearheading a Community Media for Governance and Development project which seeks to foster a diverse and thriving media landscape by strengthening citizen engagement, introducing community news reporting, and ensuring that the community is accountable to itself and other stakeholders. In the U.S., Kawala worked with the Media Literacy Project in Albuquerque, New Mexico, concentrating on developing strategies to popularize the project’s campaign against hate speech in the media and learning of the process through which to get a petition or resolution through the legislative council. Having finished the Community Solutions Program, Kawala has focused her work on increasing local government accountability and civic participation through media campaigns and public-private partnerships.
