Raphael Marques de Morais investigates corruption in Angola and runs a watchdog website, Maka Angola. He began his career as a part‐time journalist for Jornal de Angola, at the time the only newspaper in the country. He continued as a journalist through the war period until 1999, when he was arrested and charged with defamation against the president. Eventually his sentence was suspended and he was ordered to pay damages, but he continued to push the boundaries of the heavily controlled media with important reporting on corruption and the impact of the extractive industries on Angolans’ lives.
