Sherri Anderson
Sherri Anderson began teaching the English Language Learners course at Gunnison High School in 2008. Her students are primarily immigrants from rural Mexico; however, she has also served students from China, Taiwan, Africa and various parts of Latin America. She sponsors GHS’s chapter of LULAC, the school’s ever-growing diversity club. She received her Master’s degree in Linguistically Diverse Education from Adams State University in 2012; and she is always striving to make her school a more inclusive, safe and accepting place for all students. By participating in TGC, Sherri brought a broader perspective on global pedagogy to GHS both in her direct work with students and through collaboration with other teachers.
Sherri Anderson believes that global education prepares students for a future where they will work, consult, collaborate, and compete with students from across the globe. Because challenges are increasingly global in nature, educators must expand student perspectives, so they grow to become culturally competent and globally-aware leaders. In her Global Education Guide, Sherri provides a global unit plan on Immigration. Students investigate culture, interactions among and within immigrant communities, phenomenon and causes of immigration, global history of immigration, and the impact of immigration on individuals, families and societies. Students interview a community member and present their findings, plan a community event to meet the interviewees, and take action by proposing resources that would make an immigrants’ transition to a new home smoother. Sherri traveled to Colombia for her International Field Experience and provides a collection of resources that can be found on her travel blog.
