Media Sustainability Index Documents Challenges Facing African Media
IREX unveiled the inaugural edition of the Media Sustainability Index (MSI) for Africa in June, with presentations at both the Canadian International Development Agency in Ottawa and the National Endowment for Democracy in Washington (video of the latter presentation may be viewed at http://www.ned.org/mm/2008.06.12Media-Africa.wmv).

International Educators Experience Community-Based Learning Through Partnerships with DC-Area Museums
After participating in a semester-long, in-service teacher training program at various US universities, a group of international teachers selected to participate in the International Leadership in Education Program (ILEP) concluded their program in Washington, DC, where they received additional training on teacher leadership and how their indiviudal professional development experiences could be transformed and applied in their classrooms, schools, and communities back home.

Youth Volunteers Help Peers, Develop Awareness of Special Needs Education in Novokuibishevsk
Volunteers as young as 12 and 13 years old are already making a difference in Novokuibishevsk, in Russia’s Samara region. Under the micro-grant project “Education for All,” the Resource Center of Novokuibishevsk recruited and trained 20 middle- and high-school-age volunteers to work with 30 children with special needs.

Russian and US Professionals Collaborate to Advance Russian Child Welfare
This spring, the USAID-supported Assistance to Russian Orphans (ARO) program, administered by IREX, sent a group of six Russian child-welfare professionals to the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) in New York City to observe US models and share lessons learned in family-based (foster) care for orphans, as well as to forge new working relationships.

Blogging Initiative in Egypt Diversifies Local Media Content
Blogging and other participatory new media techniques and their connection with production of local news content were the focus of a recent three-day training course for Egyptian journalists run by Cairo University and jointly supported by two USAID-funded IREX projects in Egypt, the Media Development Program (MDP) and the Partnership Program for Democracy and Governance (PPDG).

IREX mourns the loss of Nasteh Dahir Farah, vice president of the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) until his untimely death in Kismayu, southern Somalia, on June 7, 2008 at the hands of armed gunmen.
